Highline National Recreation Trail - East Section
The Highline Trail provides 51 miles of spectacular views. It
begins at the Pine Trailhead and ends at Two-Sixty Trailhead on
State Route 260. This page covers the east end trails.
This historic trail was established in the late 1800s to link
homesteads and ranches under the Mogollon Rim. It was designated a
National Recreation Trail in 1979.
NOTE: All trail distances are one-way. Most trails are open
to Mountain bikes but check with Payson Ranger Station. Trail
system is closed to all motorized vehicles.

Trailhead Access
Hatchery TH: 27 miles east of SR 260 on FR 289.
See Canyon TH: 2 miles east of SR 260 on FR 284.
Two-Sixty TH: 27 miles east of Payson on SR 260. Facilities
include toilet, corral, and large parking area.

TR 31: The Highline Trail
Rating: More Difficult / Lenght: 51 miles.
TR 292: Horton Springs Trail
Rating: Most Difficult / Length: 1.5 miles
The lower half of this trail is steep with switchbacks. Not
recommended for horses.
TR 143: Babe Haught Trail
Rating: Most Difficult / Length: 3 miles
Built by pioneer "Babe" Haught to pack supplies in over the Rim
from Winslow. Easily accessed from Hatchery Trailhead.
TR 184: See Canyon Trail
Rating: Most Difficult / Length: 3.5 miles
A challenging yet scenic hike, particularly in the fall.
TR 185: See Spring Trail
Rating: Most Difficult / Length:1/5 mile
Starts about 1/2 mile north of the junction with TR 31
TR 278: Promontory Trail
Rating: Most Difficult / Length: 3/4 mile
A steep, brushy, challenging trail, difficult to follow, and not
recommended for horses.
TR 291: Drew Trail
Rating: Most Difficult / Length: 1.5 miles
An old pioneer trail built prior to 1909, easiest access is from SR
260 to FR 300.
TR 285: Horton Creek Trail
Rating: Easiest / Length: 4 miles
Probably the most popular trail on the Payson Ranger District, this
trail starts from Upper Tonto Creek Campground.
TR 32: Derrick Spur Trail
Rating: More Difficult / Length: 1 mile
This trail winds easily through the pines and joins with TR 33.
TR 33: Derrick Trail
Rating: More Difficult / Length: 2.5 miles
This trail, in conjunction with trails TR 31 and TR 285, forms an
all-day hike. Take FR 289 1 mile to Upper Tonto Creek Campground.
The trail starts at the back of the campground.
TR 179: Military Sinkhole Trail
Rating: Most Difficult / Length: 2.5 miles
The trail begins on the Rim Road near the military road built by
Gen. George Crook.
