Overview: From the top of Picketpost Mountain, an iceberg of rock jutting out of the desert near Superior, you have amazing views of the Superstition Mountains, Four Peaks, the Sierra Anchas and more. The mountain served as a lookout post for Gen. George Stoneman's cavalry.
Directions: From Apache Junction take US 60 north toward Superior; go over Gonzales Pass to just past mile marker 221; FR 231 is a dirt road to your right (look for the windmill).
Trailhead: From the TH parking lot, take the Arizona Trail south about a quarter mile; veer to the left, onto an old mining road, marked by a pile of rocks. Watch for the mine shaft where the trail becomes single track. This is not an official Forest Trail and requires some scrambling. There is more than one way to the top, so pick your route. It takes about 2 hours to reach the top. 2az.us! See Map icon
