Overview: Includes the mining town of Miami, Roosevelt Lake and the Salt River, the rugged Sierra Ancha Mountains, the small town of Young, and 59 miles of dirt road from A Cross Rd. to Young, and again to SR 260 (2WD okay). 
Directions: Take US 60 east to Miami then take SR 88 to Roosevelt Lake. Then take SR 288 north to Young. After Young the road becomes FR 512 which intersects with SR 260. Take SR 260 west to Payson, then take SR 87 south back to Mesa and Phoenix.
Time Allowed: Three hours plus (with stops) from US 60 to SR 260 (33 miles to Payson)..
Elevation: 2,100 feet at Salt River to 7,600 feet at the Mogollon Rim..
Rating: Not for everyone, hairpin curves, sparsely populated, primitive yet very scenic..
Camping: Reynolds Creek Campground, Workman Creek Recreation Area, Rose Creek Campground.
